Vy Thi Sinh, 60, and her son are living in a shabby house with nothing valuable in Son Dong District’s Dai Son Commune.
Sinh’s husband was affected by Agent Orange when he was a soldier. He died due last year to lung, liver and heart problems. In the last days before his death, he had to use a lot of pain relievers.

During more than ten years of struggling with serious diseases, Sinh had to sell all the family’s valuables to cover her husband's treatment.
In April 2020, while working on the field, she suddenly fainted and was taken to hospital. She was then diagnosed with pneural effusion and cirrhosis.
She said that since her husband’s death, her condition has worsened and her stomach has continued to swell.
Meanwhile, her son Hoang Van Muoi, 21, now looks like a child because of intellectual disability. He is also facing congenital dumbness and blindness.
"My husband is an AO/dioxin victim, this has also affected my son,” Sinh added.
Luong Van Tu, vice chairman of Dai Son Commune, said that Sinh’s family is very poor, while her relatives are too. Local authorities called for public support for the family but this proved limited.
