Storm Wipha heading for northern coastal localities

Storm Wipha is on en route to the northern coastal provinces of Quang Ninh and Haiphong, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, as of 7 am this morning, the eye of the storm was some 230 kilometres northeast of the Paracel Islands with a highest wind speed of 60-75 km/hour.

In the next 24 hours, the typhoon would move west-north-west at the speed of 15-20 kilometres per hour.

By 7 am on August 1, the storm would be near Leizhou Peninsula in China. Between 24 and 48 hours later, it would move westwards.

The storm has been forecasted to hit coastal areas from Quang Ninh Province to Haiphong City with a wind speed of 75-90 kilometres per hour.

From 48 to 72 hours after that, the typhoon is predicted to continue ravaging the mainland of Quang Ninh and Haiphong and then weaken into a tropical pressure.

The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting have also warned torrential rains in northern mountainous areas these days, including Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Son La provinces
