The provincial People’s Committee held an urgent meeting April 6 with local authorities and relevant agencies about the missing radioactive material at Pomina 3 steel plant in Tan Thanh District’s Phu My I industrial park.

The plant has five items of radioactive material and in mid-March determined one was missing.

An anonymous official from the Pomina 3 steel plant said on March 25 that Dao Duc Hung, who was in charge of radioactive safety, handed his task to Nguyen Van Ut, a newcomer. Ut inventoried supplies and could not account for some radioactive material.

Le Thanh Dung, vice chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, has called on all relevant authorities and agencies to determine what happened.

“First priority should be given to finding the radioactive material, instead of focusing on finding the culprit. Those who provide proper information about the radioactive material will be rewarded,” Dung said.

On April 4, the Ministry of Science and Technology sent a document to the provincial government and the Department of Radiation and Nuclear Safety, requesting drastic measures to find out the missing radioactive material.

The radioactive material is for measuring steel liquidity at steel germ production chains.
