Vietnam finishes in top five at International Maths Olympiad

Vietnam ranked fifth among 119 teams at the 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad after winning two gold, three silver and one bronze medal.

Vietnam's national team finished fifth among 119 countries and territories at the 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), securing two gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal.

The results were announced by Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training on the afternoon of July 19.

With a total score of 168 points, Vietnam ranked behind China (232 points), the United States (207), Russia (196) and Singapore (169). The result marked an improvement from last year, when Vietnam won the same medal tally but finished ninth among 110 participating teams.

The International Mathematical Olympiad, first held in 1959, is the world's most prestigious mathematics competition for secondary school students. Vietnam has participated in the event since 1974.

The 2026 IMO is being held in Shanghai, China, from July 13 to July 21, with contestants competing over two official examination days.
