Border guards in Ca Mau Province have safely released a rare green sea turtle after it became trapped in a fishing net and was rescued by a local fisherman.

According to the Dat Mui Border Guard Station, the incident occurred at around 4 am on July 18, when Tran Be Ngoan, born in 1987 and a resident of Dat Mui Commune, discovered the turtle while fishing offshore.
The turtle, measuring nearly one metre in length and weighing approximately 120kg, had become entangled in fishing nets.
Recognising the importance of protecting endangered wildlife, Ngoan carefully freed the animal, brought it aboard his vessel and returned to shore to report the incident to the Dat Mui Border Guard Station.
After receiving the report, border guards worked with the Ngoc Hien Forest Protection Unit and local fishermen to examine the turtle's condition before releasing it safely back into its natural marine habitat.

Dinh Hoang Than, commander of the Dat Mui Border Guard Station, said the green sea turtle is one of Vietnam's rare and protected marine species. It is listed in both the Vietnam Red Data Book and the IUCN Red List as a threatened species requiring strict conservation measures because of the risk of extinction.
