Flash flood in Son La Province on September 7.

The heavy rain starting from 7 am until noon resulted in a flash flood, sweeping away many gardens and crops in Ta Hoc Commune, Mai Son District.

Ha Van Hai, a local in Hoc Village, said, "Whenever there are heavy rains, we'll have a flash flood from Ta Hoc Stream. Several households living along the stream had to take their belongings to higher places to avoid the flooding."

The flood also badly damaged the roads and affected daily activities.

"We don't have any bridge in this area," Hai said. "Heavy rains mean congestion. I really hope the authorities will build a bridge here so our lives will be less difficult during the rainy season."

The mountainous commune of Ta Hoc has rough terrain and often has flash floods and landslides during the rainy season. Because of the many slopes and small streams, the flash floods become more severe as the rains continue.

Mua A Thai, chairman of Ta Hoc Commune People's Committee, said, "Because of the rains and flash floods, it's very difficult to travel on main roads connecting villages along Da River like Pon or Pa No villages to the commune's centre. Most of them are dirt roads and cross many streams. Households living along Ta Hoc Stream are the hardest hit."

Two houses in Mong Village were in danger of being swept away while the crops were damaged. Thai said after the flood, they had sent employees to the scene to inspect the damages.

National Highway 6 section in Co Noi Commune was submerged underwater. Many vehicles were flooded and left stranded.
