Somali militants claim responsibility for World Cup bombings

The deadly bombing during the closing minutes of the World Cup in Uganda has brought the spotlight back on terrorists operating in the region.

The deadly bombing during the closing minutes of the World Cup in Uganda has brought the spotlight back on terrorists operating in the region.

Somali militants have claimed responsibility for the blasts, which killed 74 people, while authorities in Uganda announced that they recovered an “explosives-laden” belt as part of their investigation.

Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of President Obama, National Security Council Spokesman Mike Hammer read a statement, “The president is deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from these deplorable and cowardly attacks, and sends his condolences to the people of Uganda and the loved ones of those who have been killed or injured. The United States is ready to provide any assistance requested by the Ugandan government.”

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said, "We wish to condemn the criminality of these attacks. From a casual look at the scene, I\'m confident police will be able to reconstruct the crime scene. ... We shall go after them because we know where they come from,” adding that the bombings were proof that, "Criminality and terrorism has always been hovering over us."

The United States has sent a Field team of FBI agents to assist the Ugandan government in their investigation.
