Le Thuy and his six children
Le Thuy, 42, is facing a difficult time after the death of his 30-year-old wife. Despite the terrible shock, he still has to try to take care of their six small children who are just between 1-13 years old.
Thuy still can remember the day when he was informed that his wife was found drowned in a local river.
"I was working at around 9 am on July 21 when someone called telling me that my wife jumped into the river and died," Thuy recalled. "I was so shocked that I fell unconscious. We didn't quarrel, we still talked to each other that morning before I went out to work and she showed no strange behaviour."
The man said they got married 14 years ago while working on coffee plantations in Dak Lak Province. Due to financial difficulties, they returned to their hometown in Quang Ngai five years ago. With some savings, they borrowed some more money to build a small house.
"I work as a construction worker earning just VND200,000 (USD8.69) a day," Thuy said. "My wife used to stay home to take care of six small children. She just applied to work for a local company several months ago but her health wasn’t so good. She and the children constantly fell ill."
While still owing some money borrowed for the house construction, the poor father is worried about the future of his children.
"My wife chose to die but I have to live to take care of the children," he said. "I'm just feeling very worried about how to act both as a mother and father. My youngest child has cried a lot asking for his mother back."
Thuy's mother Nguyen Thi Loc, 68, said that despite financial difficulties, Thuy and his wife used to live happily with their children.
"They all worked very hard to support their family," Loc said. "However, their life has never been easy as they have too many children. How sad she decided to die leaving the children behind. They are too small to face this pain."
Vice chairman of Nghia Thuong Communal People's Committee, Le Van Phi, said that they supported the family of Le Thuy VND3 million to help cover his wife’s funeral costs.
"The family are facing a very difficult time," the official said. "I hope that they will receive support from the public to overcome this."
