The decision has been signed by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Ha Cong Tuan.
Vietnam will temporarily stop importing pork and pork-based products from Hungary and Poland from September 20
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) cited the World Organisation for Animal Health as saying that African swine fever hit the two Hungarian provinces of Heves and Szaboles-Szatmar-Berge, killing 18 pigs.
The ASF has also affected the five Polish provinces of Warminsko – Mazurskie, Podkarpackie, Podlaskie, Mazowieckie and Lubelskie with 477 pigs affected so far this year.
The import ban will be removed until Hungary and Poland are free from the epidemic based on the regulations of the World Organisation for Animal Health.
However, the MARD said that shipments of pork and pork-based products from Poland and Hungary before September 20 are still allowed to enter Vietnam.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has ordered MARD, relevant agencies and localities to take prompt measures to prevent African swine fever reaching Vietnam.
Agriculture and rural development departments of all localities were required to sterilise markets and slaughterhouses between September 15 and October 15.
