Phan Trong Lam, an official from the province's Hong Loc Commune, said that the family of Nguyen Thi Hieu, 67, is the most difficult case in his area.
"Hieu is now the breadwinner of the family and has to take care of her husband and their two sons who are all mentally ill," the official said. "In addition, her seven-year-old grandson is also developing the same problem."
Hieu and her husband Ho Sy Kiem, 66, have three children together. Kiem used to be a healthy man but started developing mental problems after their third child was born in 1994.
The woman shared that she tried to work hard to raise the children alone and hope for a better future. However, the two sons gradually developed mental diseases as they grew up. One of them, Ho Sy Duyen, got married in 2015 and faced the disease right after his son, Ho Sy Son, was born in 2016. His wife left them after that.
"Sometimes I just want to die, as I don't want to see bad luck keep falling onto my family," she said. "But seeing my ill husband and children, I told myself that I have to live to take care of them."
She said that she has sold everything in their house that was worth money to pay for medical treatment for her husband and children. Some of their furniture was damaged by them during their seizures. Now they live in a deteriorating house with only two beds for the ill people to share while she has to sleep on the floor. Meanwhile, she doesn't have enough money to bring her seven-year-old grandson, who has also shown similar symptoms as his grandfather and father, to hospital for a check-up.
"I cannot do any work to earn money," Hieu said. "We're living on a small allowance of VND1.50 million (USD62.50) a month from the government. I only wish that I have good health to take care of them. But sometimes they would attack me during their seizures."
