Two police captains, Nguyen Trung Hieu and Do Huynh Trung Quan were rewarded for "showing strong responsibility in their work and acting as good role models for others," at a ceremony held on Monday by the District 5 Police Department.
According to reports by the department, on March 26, while Hieu and Quan were working at the intersection of Vo Van Kiet-An Binh streets, a car driver rushed to them begging for help to clear the way so that he could take a woman in labour to hospital. The two officers immediately drove two police motorcycles to clear way on a two-kilometre crowded street for the car to rush to the Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital.

The driver, Le Minh Thanh, 30, said that he was taking his sister who was showing signs of labour from Dong Nai Province to Ho Chi Minh City at 7am on March 26. After passing the Long Thanh-Dau Giay-Ho Chi Minh City Expressway, the woman started to cry in pain. He tried to speed up for some kilometres and heard the baby crying. He was very worried because the road was too crowded at that time.
"I saw two traffic policemen directing the traffic and rushed to them to ask for help," the driver said. "They immediately accepted and drove their vehicles to clear the way for us. And thanks to their help, my sister and her baby received timely treatment."
Speaking at the ceremony, Hieu said that he could not think about anything else at that time but the woman and the newly-born baby in need of help.
"They were needing urgent help from doctors. Luckily the mother and the baby were all safe," he said.
Head of District 5 Police Department, Nguyen Van Tien, noted that all police officers were taught to act the same as the two captains Hieu and Quan in that situation.
"However such actions with good results should still be praised and rewarded so as to spread the positive spirit among the police force," he said.
