A police major in the southern province of Kien Giang shot and killed a man who attacked a local woman and then tried to drown her newborn baby in a water tank.

Major Le Minh Chanh, chief police officer of Phu Quoc District's Dong Duong Town, said he fired a warning shot before killing Nguyen Van Huu, 26.
It is alleged that on September 6, Huu, who was drunk, came to the house of Truong Cam Ly, demanding to be let inside. Her younger brother opened the door. Huu rushed into the home, entering Ly’s bedroom and grabbed her 13-day-old baby, Bui Truong Bao Ngoc.
When Ly rushed to Huu to save her baby, he kicked her to the floor and beat her unconscious with a rock.
Local police were called by Ly's farther.
Police allegedly spent two hours negotiating with Huu to release the baby. But Huu went to the water tank in the yard and tried to drown the baby.
Chanh fired a shot into the air to warn him, but Huu refused to release the baby. Chanh then shot him in the stomach. He died later that day of the injury. The baby was saved.
