The body of Nguyen Tuan Anh was found on March 17 in a sewer in Vinh Yen City. People said that the local forensic tests had concluded that Anh was drunk and had drowned in the sewer despite heavy injuries to the body. Local people had marched with Anh's coffin to protest the conclusion.
Later, the pathologists said that they had never concluded that Anh died from drowning. Their initial autopsy report on the field which has the signature of Anh's family said that Anh might have died from being beaten and then dumped when dead into the sewer. Talking with the reporters, Anh's family showed confusion and said they were unsure about that day because of huge commotion and they were emotional.
The Ministry of Public Security worked with the local police to investigate the case and detained six suspects. According to the Ministry of Public Security's forensic conclusions, Anh died from drowning with major injuries to the backside and knees.
According to the suspects, they beat the victim before pushing him into the sewer. Anh was unable to survive under water because of the alcohol and heavy beating. The suspects' statements match the findings.
Hiep, Anh's cousin, said the two of them had gone to drink then visited a restaurant. They brawled with a group of men but Hiep had escaped and did not know what happened to Anh.
Because several of the suspects lived in a house that is said to be owned by Tran Khanh D. son-in-law of the chairman of Vinh Phuc Province, there are rumours that Anh may be killed by him.
D. denied the accusation. He said he had served a previous prison term and was acquainted with the suspects. When he finished the term, he invited some people to work for his new company.
