Vietnam and Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations on July 21, 1970, and have maintained a traditional friendship with expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

Sri Lanka regards Vietnam as a successful model of economic development and has recognised it as a fully fledged market economy, the ministry said.

In defence, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding in 2011 and have since expanded cooperation, including exchanges on pandemic response. In security, agreements on extradition and the transfer of sentenced persons were signed in 2014, alongside ongoing collaboration in combating transnational crime and terrorism.

Economic ties have grown steadily. Bilateral trade reached about USD 260 million in 2025, up 20 per cent from 2024. As of March 2026, trade stood at around USD 50 million.

In investment, Sri Lanka has 34 valid projects in Vietnam with total registered capital of USD 43 million, spanning seven sectors.

The two sides have also strengthened cooperation in finance, customs and education, including agreements on double taxation avoidance and a 2023-2026 education partnership.

The Vietnamese community in Sri Lanka numbers about 200 people, including workers, students and those in service industries.

Both countries continue to coordinate closely at regional and international forums, reflecting a broad based and evolving partnership.
