Ly Nhan Kiet, a grade-six student from Yen Ninh Secondary School in Yen Bai City, said that his father died from liver cancer when he was in Grade 3. Six months after that, his mother died from diabetes. Since then, he has been staying with his paternal grandmother.

However, his grandmother, who is nearly 80 years old, is usually sick.
Kiet and his grandmother are living in a dilapidated house which could collapse at any time.
Nguyen Vinh Truyen, deputy head of Yen Bai’s Study Promotion Association, said that Kiet’s study results are good, but he is facing a gloomy future. His family is very poor and his grandmother is his only relative.
According to Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, Deputy Party Secretary of residential area 9 in Yen Ninh Ward, Kiet’s condition is among the most disadvantaged in the locality. Every month, he receives a subsidy of VND 400,0000 (USD 16.60) from the government for being an orphan.
He is also exempt from tuition fees at school.
