Two children lost their mother at young ages
Their grandchildren, 5-year-old Thuy Hien and 3-year-old Huy Hieu were born into this disadvantaged background. Their mother was ill and didn't have enough milk while their father's income as a bricklayer was too little.
Two years ago, Huong's son-in-law continued borrowing money to go to Rumania as a guest worker, hoping that he would improve their situation. However, the reality is less than desired and he had planned to return home for a while. Unfortunately, while he is stranded in Rumania because of the Covid-19 outbreak, his wife had another heart attack and died two days later.
Hien and Hieu are still too small to understand that their mother has gone forever. "The cookies and candies are sent by my mother. My mother has gone to work so I play at home with my grandparents," Hien said.
"They played under the altar," Hieu's grandfather, Le Thanh Huong, said. "At those times, it felt like they were comforted by their mother and they slept well at night."
Even they haven't been able to pay off the old debts, they still had to borrow another VND30m (USD1,300) to bring Hieu's mother to the hospital and pay for the funeral. They can't keep borrowing from relatives anymore.
"I've borrowed everywhere I can think of in the past years," Huong said.
