Hoang Phuc Lam, head of the centre’s long-term weather forecasting board, said temperatures in the northern region will sharply fall in the coming days. The temperature of the midland and delta localities will drop to between 8 and 11 degrees centigrade. Meanwhile, mountainous areas will face the temperature of 2-3 degrees centigrade. Some areas have been forecasted to see snow and ice.

The temperature in Hanoi will drastically fall from the evening December 16 to around 10 degrees centigrade. The weather will be colder on the evening of December 17-18. During the day, the average temperature of Hanoi and many other northern localities will be 12-13 degrees centigrade.

The cold front may last for a week, Lam added.

Earlier, Hoang Duc Cuong, director of the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, forecasted that this year winter would be colder than the previous three years.

He added that the cold weather ranging between seven and 10 days would mainly occur in January and February.
