Groundbreaking ceremony for a bridge on the Sai Gon River was held in District 2 in HCM City on September 7.

The bridge and an underwater pedestrian tunnel are expected to be completed in 11 months. The main bridge will cross Sai Gon River, to Kim Cuong Island, and a 292-metre branch with four lanes will cross Giong Ong To River. The project includes an embankment and a riverside road.

Heavy container trucks will be banned from the new bridge.

The bridge is hoped to better connect Binh Khanh Ward with Thanh My Loi Ward in District 2. It also helps ease traffic from Mai Chi Tho to the Ring Road 2, the main routes in the eastern city. Dong Van Cong Street is mostly used by trucks to carry goods from and to Cat Lai Port while Nguyen Thi Dinh Street is narrow. Both of the streets face serious congestion and traffic danger.

In addition, Thanh My Loi Ward is experiencing rapid urbanisation. Congestion will become more of a problem as more people move in there.

The new bridge to Kim Cuong Island not only will better connect the eastern part of the city, but it will also help reduce congestion on Dong Van Cong Street and around Cat Lai Port.
