Mother calls for help after losing four sons

A woman in Dak Lak Province who has lost four sons to various illnesses is calling for help to treat her husband with cancer and her son with epilepsy.

A woman in Dak Lak Province who has lost four sons to various illnesses is calling for help to treat her husband with cancer and her son with epilepsy.

Nguyen Thi Nha and her family live in Village 8, Buon Ma Thuot City. Her husband, Le Quoc Khanh is in the final stage of liver cancer. The hospital said there was nothing they could do and let him go home.

Nha and Khanh have five sons and two daughters together. "They were healthy at birth but at around 10 years old, four of my sons became weaker, paralysed and had muscle atrophy. They were bed-bound and died," Nha said. "If only I were the one who was sick instead of them."

Her first son died in 2006 and three others died soon later.

Nha's family only has a small field so both Nha and her husband have to find additional work but their incomes are small. Seeing the family struggle after borrowing money to take their sons to hospitals and owe a VND40m (USD1,700) debt, a priest had helped build a house for them.

Unfortunately, Nha's youngest son, Le Quoc Hung, born in 1999, had dengue fever and a seizure. He fell from the bed and was diagnosed with epilepsy. He dropped out of school later and found work as a bricklayer.

"But he still has seizure sometimes so people don’t want to employ him. They only hire him just for a few days. It's tough. His monthly medicine costs are about VND1m," Nha said. "I'm getting old now so not many people want to hire me either. I don't mind, I can do anything. Without money, we don't know how to keep our daughters in school."

Vice Chairwoman Cu EBur Commune Le Thi Thanh Huong said, "We tried to help them during festivals and holidays but the commune has many poor households with limited funds too so we can't help them much."
