The incident, which occurred in Sa Thay District, occurred as the driver was fleeing from forest inspectors.
Meanwhile, in Nam Mo Ray Commune, a worker for the Dak Lak Rubber Company caught a young black-shanked douc when he was clearing trees to plant rubber. He handed it over to authorities.
The black-shanked douc is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, but many continue to be killed for their meat.
Conservationists are outraged that one provincial youth, Nguyen Van Quang, 20, from Kom Tum, recently posted many photos of two grey-shanked doucs (Pygathrix cinerea), an extremely rare species, on Facebook.
He admitted buying them from three poachers, then torturing and eating them.
According to Resolution 32/2006/ND-CP, killing an endangered species such as the black-shanked douc can lead to a jail term of up to three years.
