The VND 6.5 billion monument was funded from the province's budget.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, vice chairman of Thua Thien-Hue Provincial People's Committee, Nguyen Thanh Binh said that the deaths of 13 military rescue team members showed their determination and dedication to protect people in need.
"This will be a place for people to commemorate the dead," the official said. "It will also help educate younger generations of the military and local people.
The 13 were part of a 21-member rescue team that was sent to verify reports of 10 workers buried by a landslide near the Rao Trang 3 Hydropower Plant deep in the jungle in Phong Dien District on October 13, 2020.
The 13, including Nguyen Van Man, Deputy Commander of the Vietnam People's Army Military Region 4, and several soldiers and officials, were buried by another landslide that struck at midnight that day while they were resting at a forest rangers station.
