
Major General Ly Anh Dung, head of the Security Investigation Agency said on December 24 that there was no evidence showing that this case was related to the Essex lorry deaths.
The Ministry of Public Security announced that the security Investigation Agency had transferred the case against Dong Guo Li and his accomplices to the Supreme's People Procuracy. Dong Guo Li and his accomplices are accused of trafficking.According to the police, the suspects illegally organised for Vietnamese people to go to European countries. The leaders include Dong Guo Li, who is a Chinese national, and Wong Chong Hiong and Ooi Gee Yik, who are Malaysians. They arrived in Vietnam to teach Chinese but secretly guided and organised for many Vietnamese to illegally travel to Europe.
Their customers travelled to other ASEAN countries with tourist visas then used Chinese visas to go to transit countries like Bosnia and Sri Lanka before reaching the final destination.
They had organised for a total of 22 Vietnamese to illegally travel abroad at the price of USD17,000 to USD40,000 per person. In some cases, the Vietnamese were discovered and expelled to Vietnam.
The first-instance trial was held by Hanoi People's Court on December 10. Dong Guo Li was given a sentence of up to seven years and six months. Wong Chong Hiong received a sentence of six years and six months and Ooi Gee Yik received a six-year sentence. Other accomplices were given a sentence of five to seven years.
