This is part of the draft planning on parking lots and bus stations to 2030 with a view to 2050 by the Department of Planning and Architecture. The department is gathering opinions from other agencies and associations so that the plan can be carried out this year.

Hanoi has nine inter-province bus stations that cover a total 17.9 hectares of land. Four of the stations are located in the inner city including Giap Bat, My Dinh, Gia Lam and Nuoc Ngam. In addition, it also has three local bus stations that cover 0.65 hectares of land.

Hanoi Urban Planning Institute assessed that the bus stations can't meet the surge in demand during holidays and special occasions. "Some stations don't meet requirements on scale and equipment and some are located in the inner city and cause traffic problems," the institute wrote in their report.

According to the plan, Giap Bat and Gia Lam stations will be shut down in 2020 and My Dinh and Nuoc Ngam will be closed in 2030 for new parking lots. The city will build seven new stations on main routes to the city from now to 2030 on 73 hectares.

New bus stations will be built in Dong Anh, Soc Son, Hoai Duc, Thanh Tri and Dan Phuong districts to better serve the public.
