Residents in Lao Cai Province's Bao Thang District are blockading a section of the Noi Bai-Lao Cai Highway in protest against inadequate compensation for the properties they lost during the site clearance for the project.

Local residents blockade highway over unpaid wages
On March 9 morning, traffic was delayed for hours as residents blocked the roadway near a toll station.
According to Do Ngoc Vien, Chairman of Xuan Giao Commune, Bao Thang District, residents took their complaint to local authorities, but the issue has not been resolved and 30 households have yet to be paid.

The blockade is the fifth staged by local residents who are still awaiting for the issue to be resolved.
Earlier local people hired by a subcontractor of Vinaconex to build drainage networks also blocked the highway for not being properly paid.
The Noi Bai-Lao Cai Highway is 265km with a total investment of USD1.46bn. The project was started in the third quarter of 2008 and was completed in September 2014.
