The resolution appointing Hung as prime minister was passed on April 7, with 495 out of 495 lawmakers voting in favour, representing 100 per cent of attending deputies and 99 per cent of the full assembly.
With the vote, Le Minh Hung, a politburo member and head of the Party Central Committee's Organisation Commission, becomes head of government for the 2026-2031 term.

Hung, born in 1970 in Ha Tinh Province, holds a master’s degree in public policy.
He has served as a member of the Party’s Central Committee in the 12th, 13th and 14th terms, as well as a member of the Secretariat and Politburo in the 13th and 14th terms. He is also a National Assembly deputy for the 15th and 16th terms.
During his career, Hung spent many years working at the State Bank of Vietnam. He served as deputy governor from October 2011 to October 2014.
He later held the position of deputy chief of the Party’s Central Office for more than a year before returning to the central bank as governor.
After nearly one term as governor, he was appointed chief of the Party’s Central Office in October 2020, before being elected to the Secretariat and then the Politburo of the 13th term in May 2024.
For about one month from May to June 2024, Hung concurrently held two key positions within the party apparatus as head of the Central Organisation Commission and chief of the Central Office.
Following personnel restructuring, from June 2024 he continued as head of the Central Organisation Commission.
At the 14th National Party Congress, Hung was re-elected to the Central Committee and Politburo, assigned to the secretariat and retained his role as head of the Central Organisation Commission until being elected prime minister by the 16th National Assembly.
