Dinh Xuan Hoa, chair of Ngoc Linh commune, said the 300m-long landslide occurred on October 31 after days of intense rain.
“Continuous heavy rain has prevented us from clearing the site,” Hoa said. Local authorities have mobilised more than 100 people to open a temporary trail across the landslide to deliver food to the isolated households.
The collapse sent red earth downstream into ten sturgeon farms about 3km away, killing more than 70 tonnes of fish.
“More than 50,000 sturgeon died from shock and oxygen depletion after the landslide. The initial loss is estimated at over 70 tonnes of fish, worth around VND 8 billion (approximately USD 320,000),” Hoa added.

Local authorities are calling on residents to help collect and consume the fish, while continuing to assess the damage to seek provincial support for affected farm owners.
