Lam Dong relocates 40 graves from cracked hillside

Authorities in Lam Dong Province have relocated 40 graves after long cracks appeared on a hillside following prolonged heavy rain.

Officials in Dam Rong 4 Commune said they were helping residents of Dung KNo 1 Village move the graves out of an area at risk of landslides. The graves were built years earlier, before the commune established a formal cemetery zone.

Initial reports said the hillside developed cracks and subsidence late on November 27 due to continuous heavy rainfall. To reduce risks, authorities mobilised residents to transfer the graves to the local designated cemetery.

Recent torrential rain has caused several hillsides in Dam Rong 4 Commune to subside or collapse. Authorities have also evacuated 10 households in Dung KNo 5 Village from danger zones.

Mai Van Khiem, director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, was quoted by the Vietnam News Agency as saying Storm Koto will continue changing direction over the next three days, shifting northward on November 29, westward on November 30 and west-southwestward on December 1.

The typhoon is expected to weaken by about one level per day and may downgrade to a tropical depression as it moves towards waters off the Quang Ngai-Dak Lak coast.
