In recent days, temperatures in Lai Chau have dropped sharply. On Monday, the average temperature was recorded at around 10 degrees Celsius. In high mountainous districts such as Sin Ho, Phong Tho, and Tam Duong, temperatures ranged from 5 to 7 degrees Celsius.
Over the past week, more than 30 children have been admitted to the Pediatrics Department of Lai Chau General Hospital daily. Most suffer from respiratory problems, flu, and diarrhoea.
The intense cold has also hit the elderly with chronic conditions, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and asthma.
The Internal Medicine Department of Lai Chau General Hospital has seen a surge in the number of elderly patients admitted, reaching twice the usual rate.
According to the provincial Department of Health, the number of patients admitted to healthcare facilities across the province has risen over the past week. Many district-level healthcare centres have had to add more beds or transfer severe cases to higher-level hospitals for treatment.
The severe cold weather is expected to persist in northern regions for the coming days. People are advised to dress warmly, especially when going outside.
