According to the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sub-Department, the mass pig deaths occurred in the districts of Son Tinh and Nghia Hanh and Quang Ngai City.
As many as 969 pigs were given vaccinations from 18 NAVET-ASFVA African swine fever bottles produced by HCM City’s based Navetco National Veterinary JSC. Just around one week after being vaccinated, 679 pigs died after having blood in their urine. The remainder that survived have lost their appetite.
The local Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sub-Department blamed the deaths on farmers failing to strictly conform to vaccination procedures. It is possible that pigs had been infected with African swine fever before being inoculated. So, the vaccination may have caused the disease to quickly worsen. All pigs the which died tested positive for African swine fever.
Navetco has been asked to pay compensation of VND1-2 million for each dead pig.
Earlier, around 100 pigs in the southern central province of Phu Yen died following African swine fever inoculation, using the NAVET-ASFVA vaccine.
