Heavy rain during the evening rush hour on October 7 flooded roads across Ho Chi Minh City, causing severe congestion and leaving many commuters struggling to get home.

The downpour lasted more than two hours, flooding several major roads across the city.

Among the worst-affected were Ung Van Khiem, Tan Cang, Dinh Bo Linh, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh and Quoc Huong streets.

Water on Ung Van Khiem Street rose to more than half a metre. Urban drainage workers put up warning signs and restricted vehicles from entering the deepest flooded areas.

Many vehicles stalled on flooded roads and had to be pushed onto the pavement to wait for the water to recede.

Dien Bien Phu Street, in Thanh My Tay Ward, was heavily congested on the evening of October 7.

At the Hang Xanh junction, traffic was at a standstill at 7 pm, with authorities continuously directing vehicles in different directions.

Traffic on Pham Van Dong Street was also packed solid on the evening of October 7.

The heavy rain blanketed many roads while traffic volumes continued to rise towards the end of the day.

The Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Centre forecast thunderstorms and scattered moderate rain across southern provinces and cities over the next three days, with some areas expected to experience heavy to very heavy rain.

Rain is expected mainly around midday, in the evening and at night, although some areas could see rain from the morning.
