HCMC bars pledge to stop drunk customers driving

More than 100 bars and eateries in Ho Chi Minh City’s Tam Binh Ward have pledged not to allow intoxicated customers to drive, in a bid to help curb traffic accidents.

On January 20, city police held a legal awareness session for over 100 food and beverage establishments that sell alcohol.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Huynh Van Hieu, deputy head of the Rach Chiec Traffic Police Team, 20 traffic accidents had occurred in the area his unit oversees between December 2025 and January 14, killing 11 people.

Alcohol-related violations account for a large share of traffic accidents, Hieu said, adding that the campaign aimed to raise awareness among business owners, particularly bar operators, and help reduce road deaths.

At the session, owners were briefed on traffic safety regulations, with an emphasis on their responsibility not to serve alcohol to people who intend to drive and to encourage customers to follow the rule: “Don’t drink and drive.”

Phan Thi Phuoc, a bar owner in Tam Binh Ward, said the campaign had helped her better understand the dangers of alcohol for road safety.

“If I see a customer is drunk, I will keep their vehicle and contact a family member to pick them up. If necessary, the bar will help book a ride-hailing motorbike or taxi to take them home safely,” she added.

Most establishments expressed strong support for the initiative and signed pledges to comply with traffic safety laws, police said, contributing to accident prevention and the maintenance of public order in the ward.
