Along Huyen Tran Cong Chua Street in District 1, many decades-old trees are surrounded by concrete. Some trees have nails driven into their trunks to hang advertisements, causing them to die slowly.
On Pasteur Street in District 3, around 30 green trees, 10-20 metres tall, are deformed by surrounding bricks.
“I usually walk along this street where the trees provide pleasant shade. But I feel very distressed seeing the trees being covered in concrete and hope the authorities will tackle the issue," said Ngoc Thi from District 3.
Not only being carved into and nailed, many tree bases are also piled with waste.
The problem can be seen on many streets in HCM City, including Huynh Tinh Cua and Le Van Sy in District 3, Nguyen Thai Son in Go Vap District, Hoang Dieu 2 and Doan Ket in Thu Duc City.
