HCM City authorities have targeted to grow one million new trees this year to increase green cover and beautify the city’s streets.

The city launched a tree planting campaign on Sunday to mark the 130th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh.

The tree planting campaign launched in HCM City on May 17

According to Le Thanh Liem, deputy chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, up to 715 among 747 spots in the city polluted by waste have improved, including 90 transformed into environmentally-friendly areas for public activities.

The city has also installed security cameras and provided 34,413 dustbins on many streets and alleys. The cameras partially help to detect environmental violations. Besides, the city has actively received public opinions on rubbish discharged into the environment.

Liem called on localities and agencies of the city to develop more green space. Local people are urged to grow trees not only at their house but also at the workplace.

On the day, municipal leaders, including Party Secretary Nguyen Thien Nhan, participated in the tree planting at the HCM City Economics University.
