HCM City official suggests Vietnam makes Covid-19 free announcement

Vietnam has ensured the necessary criteria to announce that the country is free of the Covid-19 pandemic, said Nguyen Thien Nhan, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City’s Party Committee.

Vietnam has ensured the necessary criteria to announce that the country is free of the Covid-19 pandemic, said Nguyen Thien Nhan, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City’s Party Committee.

Nhan made the suggestion at an ongoing 14th National Assembly (NA) ninth session in Hanoi this morning, June 15.

According to Nhan, at present, there are four types of epidemic-affected nations in the world. The first consists of countries in their second phase which have reported increasing infections like the US, Russia, Brazil and India. The second are those which have had the highest infection number but seen the gradual decrease such as Germany, France and Italy.

The third group is countries with an average rate of below 10 infected cases per million, including Laos and Cambodia. Meanwhile, the final group is nations which have never witnessed the figure of 1,000 cases per 1 million people, including Vietnam and Myanmar.

Nhan added that Vietnam's rate of infected cases was just 3.1 Covid-19 cases for every 1 million people. Secondly, the percentage of people receiving treatment was no more than a single person for every 1 million people. In reality, the rate is only 0.2 people. Meanwhile, Vietnam had recorded no deaths caused by Covid-19 so far.

For these three factors, Vietnam would be eligible to announce being cleared from the virus.

The official noted that Vietnam should have a roadmap to gradually open its doors to the world, particularly 17 key markets which represent up to 90% of the country’s total foreign investment, 80% of trade and 80% of tourists, including Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Germany and Australia.

At the meeting, National Assembly Deputy Nguyen Lan Hieu, Director of Hanoi Medical University, said that Vietnam is still facing the high risk of the pandemic outbreak again as many countries in the world have still seen high infections.

Hieu recommended the application of a closed quarantine process for foreigners to enter Vietnam. Vietnam needs to co-operate with other countries to conduct Covid-19 antibody tests.

Until now, Vietnam has confirmed 334 Covid-19 patients with 194 imported cases which were quarantined immediately after arrival, posing no threat of spreading in the community.

Vietnam has had no COVID-19 community infections for 60 days.
