Despite light rains and appalling pollution, many people waited outside gold shops on Tran Nhan Tong Street from the crack of dawn in order to buy gold for luck. Several people said buying gold on the God of Wealth Day is a tradition they had done in years, wishing for luck and good business.

Pham Trang from Long Bien District said she arrived early because she hoped to be one of the first people to buy gold on this day.

"It's important to buy gold and hold a ceremony to pray for good business in the new year. If I don't hurry, I may not have enough time to prepare," she said.
