Hanoi police step up AI camera monitoring during Tet

Hanoi traffic police have warned of heavy congestion ahead of the Lunar New Year or Tet, saying AI cameras would run round the clock to ensure road safety and prevent gridlock.

According to an official from the Hanoi Traffic Police Department, traffic volumes in the capital had surged in the run-up to Tet as residents increased travel for shopping and holiday journeys.

Police have activated traffic plans, including diversions, to curb congestion around terminals, stations and key gateways.

As part of a peak-season safety campaign for the Lunar New Year, traffic police units have deployed patrols and checkpoints on major routes to regulate traffic and detect violations, aiming to keep vehicles moving smoothly.

Police said they had assessed congestion risks in advance and positioned personnel and equipment accordingly, coordinating with other agencies to guide traffic and assist road users.

Enforcement will be stepped up throughout the Tet holiday, with patrols continuing to penalise violations and support travel during the holiday period and the return to work afterward, the department said.

Authorities are also making extensive use of AI-enabled cameras to detect violations early and intervene promptly.

“Traffic police will maintain 24-hour monitoring of the camera system before, during and after Tet to ensure safety, prevent congestion and strictly handle violations,” he added.

Police advised travellers returning to their hometowns by coach to buy tickets only at official terminals or authorised platforms, enter and exit buses at terminals and follow instructions from operators.

They also urged the public not to hail coaches outside stations and to comply with traffic rules, including not driving after drinking alcohol, staying in designated lanes and obeying traffic signals and officers’ instructions.
