The municipal government of Hanoi has launched a campaign to combat the onset of HIV and AIDS in the capital city, as well as the stigma that goes along with the disease.

The campaign is seeing the participation of 29 districts.

The country’s latest statistics showed that by the middle in November 2011, Vietnam had recorded 274,500 of people living with HIV/AIDS. Around 100,000 of them were in the advanced stages of AIDS, and 51,800 had died of the disease.

Hanoi currently has 17,000 people suffering from the disease.

Phung Van Hoan, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Red Cross Society, said the agency, in coordination with other associations in Hanoi, has set up several HIV/AIDS groups that will provide assistance to people living with the disease.
