HCM City faces flooding risk as high tides coincide with heavy rain

HCM City faces a heightened flooding risk as high tides are forecast to exceed the third warning level by up to 15cm, coinciding with heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Centre forecast scattered showers and thunderstorms across HCM City and southern Vietnam on October 11, with heavy rain in some areas, mainly during the afternoon and evening.

Temperatures are expected to range from 23-26 degrees Celsius at night to 30-33 degrees during the day.

Water levels in rivers and canals across HCM City are forecast to rise rapidly over the next two to three days due to the early ninth lunar month's high tides.

The tidal peak is expected on October 11-12, with water levels at Phu An and Nha Be monitoring stations reaching 1.70-1.75 metres, or 10-15cm above the third warning level.

Peak tides are forecast between 4 am and 6 am and again between 4 pm and 6 pm.

At Thu Dau Mot station, water levels could reach 1.90-1.95 metres, exceeding the third warning level by 30-35cm. Peaks are expected between 6 am and 8 am and between 6 pm and 8 pm.

Forecasters said the tides would be among the highest of the year, warning that heavy rain coinciding with peak tides could cause significant flooding in low-lying and riverside areas, disrupting transport and daily activities.

Residents, particularly those in flood-prone neighbourhoods, have been advised to monitor weather and tidal forecasts and take precautions against flooding.
