Fisherman survives nearly eight hours adrift at sea

A fisherman whose boat sank off Quang Tri Province survived nearly eight hours in rough seas before swimming and drifting safely ashore.

The Gianh Port Border Guard Station, under the Quang Tri Provincial Border Guard Command, confirmed on the morning of October 10 that Nguyen Manh Cuong, owner and captain of fishing boat QB-93230-TS, had returned safely after being reported missing.

At 11.55 am on October 9, the boat sank about 3.5 nautical miles from the coast as it was approaching the Gianh estuary. Four crew members were on board.

A nearby fishing boat operating in the area rescued three crew members, but Cuong was initially reported missing.

After receiving the alert, the Gianh Port Border Guard Station urgently called on vessels operating nearby to assist with the search and mobilised other boats anchored ashore to join the operation.

At about 7.30 pm that day, after nearly eight hours at sea, Cuong managed to swim towards shore and drifted onto the coast of Dong Trach Commune. Local authorities and residents helped him return home safely.
