Workers from Vung Tau Paradise Joint Venture Company has raised concern over the firm’s regulation that bans them from bringing over VND200,000 (USD2) to their workplace.

The workers sent their complaint about the regulation issued on January 16 to Ba Ria-Vung Tau Newspaper.
According to the rule, if any staff member takes more than 200,000 along with them to their workplace, they will have the money confiscated and also be punished in line with the company’s regulations. In case, any who wants to bring the money higher than the regulated level, they must receive approval from their managers so that they can be allowed to leave the company. All staff are searched by security staff.
The board of directors said many customers had their money and personal items stolen. Before the rule was issued, the company held a meeting to seek opinions from board, trade union and staff. They all agreed on the rule.
The board added that they had not got any reaction from the workers until the newspaper sent the petition to them.
Liu Mei Teh, Director of the company, claimed that physically searching staff was normal and all tourist firms applied this. In spite of the regulation being in place the company had not yet begun searching its staff members.
After speaking to the press, the company on January 25 revised the regulation, permitting the caddies to bring with them not more than VND1 million (USD47.6), while other staff can carry up to VND200,000. Security have been told to adopt a friendly attitude when searching the workers.
Lawyer Chi Dan from Chi Dan Law Firm said regulation was illegal and offensive to the staff and it was no surprise they had complained.
Staff discipline is already governed by provisions laid out in the Labour Code and the criminal law, making the extra regulation highly dubious.
