Four students drowned while swimming in the Da River in Phu Tho Province on July 16 according to local authorities.

Thanh Thuy District People's Committee announced on Tuesday evening that the accident occurred at 6 pm when five students aged between 18-22 went swimming in the Da River in Xuan Loc Commune.

Four of them were swept into deep whirling water and drowned.

Head of the Xuan Loc Communal Police Department, Tran Duc Manh said that right after being informed of the incident, they sent five boats and dozens of rescue workers to the scene.

"We found the bodies of four at 8 pm," Manh said. "They were all students from Dai Nam University in Hanoi who came to visit a friend in the area.

The Da River runs through some northwestern provinces of Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Hoa Binh and Phu Tho before joining with the Red River in Phu Tho Province.
