According to a report from Thu Duc City Police Department, the four victims were Luong Van Kiet, 45, his 44-year-old wife, and their 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son. They were found dead in their 16-square-metre rented room at around 6 am when a neighbour managed to break the room's window after not seeing them going to work as usual nor answering his phone calls.

"Through the window, Kiet and his wife were seen lying unconscious on the floor," the police reported. "Some neighbours broke down the door and saw the couple’s two children lying unconscious on the garret. The room was full of smell coming from a charcoal stove on which they were steaming fish. The four were rushed to hospital but the parents and their son were already dead while doctors failed to save their daughter who died later in the afternoon."

Nextdoor neighbour Nguyen Van Cuong said that the couple came from Binh Thuan Province and had lived there for five years. They earned their living by selling steamed fish. Due to financial difficulties, their two children had dropped out of school and were working at a local company.

"They were very friendly people," Cuong said.

Police are further investigating the case while saying that initial investigations showed that the four died from CO2 suffocation coming from the charcoal stove.
