As the country's biggest Covid-19 hotspot has applied tightened social distancing rules from August 23, the Ministry of Defence has sent troops to the city to ensure people stay at home.
Besides guarding Covid-19 checkpoints and patrolling local streets, military personnel are helping transport food and necessities to Covid-19 patients and people facing financial difficulties.
On the morning of August 23, a group of 22 military officers and local authorities of Truong Tho Ward in Thu Duc City sent vegetables donated by some organisations to local residents.
While giving the gifts, the officers also encouraged people to try to overcome this difficult time and stressed that the government would supply enough food for everyone during this social distancing period. They also advised people to stay home and strictly follow virus prevention rules.
Many people said that they were moved when seeing the military officers visiting them with the necessary food.
A woman, Nguyen Thi Nhung, was happy when receiving the gift. "I am very grateful for the valuable gifts from the government and various donors," she said. "I've lost my job for three months now and can only live on people's donations."
A military officer, Nguyen Truong Thinh said that he was happy to provide some help to people in need during this time. "We will try to provide enough food to all these people so that they can overcome it."
