Floodwaters recede slowly on rivers in eastern Quang Ninh

Floodwaters on rivers in eastern Quang Ninh Province were receding slowly on May 17 after heavy rain, with authorities warning of landslide risks in mountainous areas.

Heavy rain from early May 17 caused rivers including the Ka Long, Tien Yen, Ha Coi and Tai Chi to swell, while slow drainage due to high tides prompted authorities to warn residents of flash flood risks.

No casualties had been reported as of 5 pm, although nearly 130 hectares of rice fields and 8 hectares of crops were inundated, authorities said.

Two landslides involving about 400 cubic metres of soil and rock on National Highway 18C in the former Binh Lieu area were cleared by the evening, while temporary repairs were completed on Provincial Road 326 after around 30 metres of road surface was washed away.

Flooding between 10 cm and 50 cm deep was reported in several areas, including Ha Long, Viet Hung, Hon Gai, Mao Khe, Quang Tan and Hoanh Bo, though water levels fell after the rain stopped.

Reservoirs across the province remained safe, with several discharging water as a precaution. Authorities in Ha Tu Ward evacuated one household facing landslide risks to safer ground.

Civil defence and emergency forces continued inspecting landslide-prone areas and weak embankments and remained on standby for possible rescue operations.

Forecasters warned that heavy to very heavy rain would continue across Quang Ninh through May 18, raising the risk of flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
