Eleven foreigners fined for riding large motorbikes on Vietnam expressway

Police in northern Vietnam have fined 11 foreign nationals after they were found riding large-displacement motorbikes on the Tuyen Quang-Phu Tho Expressway, where motorcycles are prohibited.

The Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security said on February 8 that the traffic police division of Phu Tho provincial police had issued administrative violation notices to the riders.

Each motorcyclist was fined VND 5 million (about USD 196) for travelling on the expressway.

The case followed public reports on the evening of February 7 of a convoy of large motorbikes using the route. Major general Do Thanh Binh, Director of the Traffic Police Department, ordered units to verify the information.

Initial checks identified a group of 11 large-displacement motorcycles, ridden by 11 men, three of whom were carrying passengers, travelling from Phu Tho towards Tuyen Quang.

By the morning of February 8, Phu Tho traffic police, working with Tuyen Quang provincial police and other units, inspected the vehicles in Minh Xuan Ward in Tuyen Quang Province. The group was then taken to the Minh Xuan Ward Police Station for further processing.

Police said the group consisted of 11 men and three women, with the motorcycles operated by the 11 foreign men. All were found to hold valid driving licences and entry visas, and the motorbike documents were legitimate.

The traffic police department urged road users, particularly foreign visitors driving in Vietnam, to familiarise themselves with local traffic regulations. It reiterated that motorcycles are strictly banned from expressways to protect the safety of all road users.
