Earthquake in China shakes buildings in Hanoi

Residents in several high-rise buildings in Hanoi felt tremors on Monday evening following a 5.2-magnitude earthquake in southern China.

According to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Earth Sciences, the earthquake struck Liuzhou in China’s Guangxi region at 8.44 pm at a depth of about 10 kilometres.

Residents in areas including Cau Giay and An Khanh areas reported noticeable shaking in apartment buildings.

Nguyen Van Cuong, a resident in Long Bien Ward, said he felt light shaking in his apartment on the 18th floor, with several household items also vibrating.

Nguyen Xuan Anh, director of the Institute of Earth Sciences, said the tremors in Hanoi were caused by aftershocks from the earthquake in Liuzhou.

The quake was the second recorded in the Liuzhou area on Monday.

Earlier, a separate 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Liunan District at a depth of 8 kilometres.

Chinese state media reported that 13 buildings collapsed in the earlier quake, leaving two people dead, one missing and four injured, while more than 7,000 residents were evacuated.

Minor earthquakes occasionally occur in Hanoi, though they are usually weak and cause little damage. Tremors are often felt more clearly in high-rise buildings.
