Dong Thap to have seaports for 70,000-tonne vessels

The southern province of Dong Thap has planned to build 12 seaports, with a total investment of VND 5 trillion (USD 195.48 million), aiming to serve vessels of 70,000 tonnes by 2030.

According to the Dong Thap Department of Construction, six seaports with 15-16 wharves will be built in Go Cong and My Tho, which can handle up to 6.6 million tonnes of cargo and 56,000 passengers annually.

The main ports include Go Cong, Soai Rap Nam Song Hau Petro, Soai Rap-Hiep Phuoc Oil Terminal, DKC Oil Depot, Binh Dong, and My Tho. These ports can handle a wide range of cargo, including general cargo, containers, bulk, and liquid goods.

Dong Thap plans to develop six new ports with 8-9 wharves along the Tien and Hau rivers, aiming to handle 2-2.4 million tonnes of cargo and 54,000-58,000 passengers per year. The ports include Dong Thap, Sa Dec, Lap Vo, Thuong Phuoc, 1, Thuong Phuoc 2 and Dong Thap Oil Terminal.

The ports will cover over 600 hectares of land and 32,800 hectares of water surface. Together with upgrades to the Soai Rap, Vam Co, and Tien river channels, these developments will help shape a modern and integrated port network.

Six ports with 8-9 wharves will be added in the upper Tien and Hau rivers, serving 2-2.4 million tonnes of cargo and up to 58,000 passengers annually. These ports, including Dong Thap, Dong Thap Oil Terminal, Sa Dec, Thuong Phuoc 1, Thuong Phuoc 2, and Lap Vo, can accommodate vessels of 5,000 to 10,000 tonnes.

Established on July 1 this year from the merger of Dong Thap and Tien Giang, the new Dong Thap Province has its administrative centre in My Tho City. With an area of over 5,900 square kilometres, a population of 4.3 million, and a 32 km coastline, it holds strong potential for seaport and coastal economic development.
