The project, approved by the provincial People's Council, will upgrade and expand Road 963 between National Highway 80 and Vi Thanh and build a new inter-provincial route linking An Giang with Can Tho.
Funded by loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and local counterpart funding, the project is scheduled to run from 2027 to 2032.
The first component will upgrade more than 42 km of Road 963 through Thanh Dong, Giong Rieng, Ngoc Chuc, Hoa Thuan and Hoa Hung communes in An Giang.
The route will run from National Highway 80 in Thanh Dong Commune to Lung Nia Bridge in Vi Tan Ward, Can Tho. It will be upgraded to a Grade III road with an 11-12-metre-wide carriageway and a design speed of 80 km/h. The project also includes 37 new bridges.
The second component will build a 20-km section of the Sa Dec-O Mon-Giong Rieng inter-provincial corridor through Giong Rieng and Thanh Hung communes.
The new road will connect the Can Tho boundary with the planned Ha Tien-Rach Gia-Bac Lieu Expressway. It will also meet Grade III standards, with a design speed of 80 km/h and an 11-12-metre-wide carriageway, and include 22 new bridges.
The project is expected to improve transport links through one of An Giang's key agricultural and aquaculture production areas, where existing roads have deteriorated and struggled to meet growing freight and travel demand.
An Giang Vice Chairman Le Trung Ho said the project would strengthen links with the Mekong Delta's regional transport network, expand development corridors and support the region's adaptation to climate change, sea-level rise and saltwater intrusion.
It is also expected to create new space for investment, industrial and urban development, tourism and the marine economy while improving disaster resilience in coastal areas.
