Wild elephant enters school grounds in Son La

A wild elephant crossed a fence and entered a school boarding area in the northern mountainous province of Son La early on August 31, prompting local authorities to issue a safety warning.

Authorities in Huoi Mot Commune said the elephant was spotted at around 2 am moving from the direction of Co Kieng Village before crossing a fence and entering the boarding area of Huoi Mot Primary and Secondary Ethnic Boarding School.

Residents, particularly those in Pan, Co Kieng and Pa Cong villages, were advised to remain vigilant and avoid areas where the elephant had been sighted.

People were urged to limit travel at night, avoid going alone to fields and forest edges, and stay away from areas showing signs of elephant activity.

Authorities also warned residents not to approach, throw objects at or attempt to chase the animal, as this could startle it and trigger an attack.

Households were advised to secure gates and livestock enclosures, while schools were asked to closely supervise pupils, particularly in boarding and semi-boarding areas.

Anyone spotting the elephant or its direction of travel was advised to keep a safe distance and immediately alert local authorities so its movements could be monitored.
