Doctors honour 21-year-old donor who saved four lives

Doctors at Viet Duc University Hospital bowed in tribute to a 21-year-old organ donor whose gift of life enabled four life-saving transplants in Hanoi.

On February 23, Viet Duc University Hospital announced that it had carried out four transplants a day earlier using organs donated by a 21-year-old male patient declared brain dead following an accident.

Before the organ retrieval procedure, medical staff observed a moment of silence, bowing their heads in gratitude to the young man whose donation offered hope to critically ill patients.

According to the hospital, the heart recipient is an 18-year-old man suffering from end-stage heart failure, suspected myocarditis, dilated cardiomyopathy and severe arrhythmia. He had been fitted with a temporary pacemaker and required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to maintain circulation. Without a transplant, doctors said, his chances of survival were extremely slim.

One day after surgery, the patient remains in intensive care. His haemodynamic indicators are stable, and he continues to receive ECMO and mechanical ventilation support. Doctors expect that, if his condition continues to improve in the coming days, life-support devices will be gradually withdrawn.

The liver transplant recipient is a 48-year-old man with cirrhosis caused by hepatitis B, diagnosed three years ago but left untreated. On the first day after surgery, he was being treated at the hospital’s anaesthesia and surgical intensive care centre.

The two kidney recipients are men aged 23 and 27.

The 23-year-old patient had undergone regular dialysis for 14 years. He was diagnosed with chronic glomerulonephritis at the age of 10 after seeking medical attention for haematuria. Despite prolonged conservative treatment, his condition progressed to stage five chronic kidney disease in June 2024.

One day after his kidney transplant, he was stable, conscious and breathing independently, with blood oxygen saturation (SpO₂) at 100 per cent. He is awaiting further blood test results.

The other kidney recipient had been diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney disease in February 2025 and had been undergoing dialysis three times a week. Following the transplant, his condition was reported as stable.
